White-collar crime in Texas happens just like it does everywhere else; however, it's not as big of an issue as other states, such as New York or California. On a national level, its a huge problem, costing the US more than $300 billion annually.

History of White Collar Crime

So how long have these types of criminals been prosecuted and what’s the history? The term "white collar crime" was first used in 1939 during a speech given by Edwin Sutherland to the American Sociological Society. When explaining it, he commented that this is "crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the course of his occupation."

The major issue with white collar crime in Texas and everywhere else is this: They are difficult to prosecute. They can be sophisticated criminals. They make every attempt to conceal their activities. When they are accused, they get the best attorneys who either get them off or cut a great deal for their client.

It should be noted that white collar crime charges in Texas are usually brought against individuals. But, there are situations where corporations themselves may be subject to investigation.

Most states, including Texas also employ their own agencies to enforce white collar criminal activity.
